Two Golds From Trinity

UConn took home two gold medals at Saturday’s mixed three-weapon tournament at Trinity College in the club’s most successful competition of the season. (Full results here)

Victor Tran and Scott Walker won the foil and sabre tournaments, respectively, and there were strong performances from the other 10 student-athletes the club brought to Hartford.

Three Weapons at Trinity

Five members of the club competed in a small local tournament at Trinity College on Saturday, which hosted about 15 competitors in each of the three mixed events. (Final Results Here) (Photos Here)

Four of the five competed in epee, making up one third of the 12 total competitors. Joel Rosiene finished 6th, Scott Walker, 8th, Valentin de Wissocq, 9th, and Rebecca Davis, 11th. By commanding such a high percentage of the field, the teammates ended up meeting each other in the first round of elimination bouts. Rosiene defeated Davis 15-1 and Walker beat de Wissocq 15-14.

Rosiene and Walker were then defeated by the two fencers who ended up in the gold medal bout. Rosiene lost to Adam McGill of Wesleyan University 15-12 and Walker lost to the No. 1 seed, Joseph Way, 14-5. Way, an A2011, beat McGill, a D2010 15-10 in the final.

Carleton Whaley was the only one to fence sabre, finishing 8th out of 12, though he made a brief comeback after being seeded last out of pools with an 0-3 record. He beat No. 4 seed Vlad Burca of Trinity 15-8 in his first elimination bout, but lost to Sarah Lerman-Sinkoff of Wesleyan 15-3 in the next round. Lerman-Sinkoff, an E2010, went on to lose 15-4 to Wint Harvey of Amherst College, an E2012, in the finals.

Walker decided to fence two events on the day, also competing in foil, finishing 10th out of 15 competitors. After finishing the epee event, he went 2-2 in foil pools, losing 15-12 in the first elimination round to No. 8 seed Joseph Messinger of Amherst. Paul Canal defeated McGill 15-10 in the gold medal foil bout.

The Big One, 2012

As usual, it was really early when we departed UConn for Smith College in Northampton.

Three of UConn’s 11 fencers, many of whom were fencing in their first competition, finished in the top half of Saturday’s tournament at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

A total of 493 competitors packed into the college’s indoor track facility, representing about 20 different schools for the aptly named “Big One.” (Full results here)

The Big One, 2010

After bringing home three medals in a local competition the previous week, the UConn Fencing Club took a stab at competing on the regional and national level at The Big One (full results here).

This tournament kicks off the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference’s season each November and features teams from all around New England and some from outside the area.

Crossing Swords for Charity

The UConn Fencing Club brought home three medals from its first tournament of the 2010-2011 competitive season on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Seven fencers with experience ranging from less than two months to more than seven years, took part in three events – épée, sabre and foil – at Sword in the Scroll Fencing Academy (SITS) in Willimantic.
